Thick hot ramen on cold days! Asahikawa’s Ankake Ramens!

On cold days, people tend to crave for ramen (some people also crave for ramen on hot days though). The ankake ramen is a thick soup ramen. It is perfect for cold days because the soup stay warm for longer. This time, we will introduce restaurants where we can eat delicious ankake ramen.

Ekinaka Shokudo Nanohana

"Station Naka Shokudo Nanohana” ( can be translated as “Nanohana the cafeteria in the station”) is located in the back of the Tourist Product Information Center on the east ticket gate side of the JR Asahikawa Station.

It moved here in 2016. Before that, Nanohana was located in the basement of the Seibu Asahikawa Store A building, which is where the new Tsuruha building was built.

Even after moving to the station building, our reporter, Tora, went several times to Nanohana but never tried the "Gomoku Ankake Ramen" out.

That is because he mostly orders yakisoba or soy sauce ramen.

Translator note:
Ankake is a soup or sauce thickened with starch (Kudzu and/or potato starch).

The Gomoku Ankake Ramen is one of the highest-priced ramen in Nanohana at 690 yen (tax included).

For the same 690 yen, there are the char siu noodle set and the fried rice set. However, as you can see, there are plenty of ingredients and the taste is great! It's a fairly good cost performance.

Ramen KAZU

Ramen KAZU is a ramen shop located in Kaguraoka 6-jo 6-chome, a residential area just off the "Plane tree street".

Our reporter went there only once, when the shop just opened, 7 years ago.
The ramen shop is located in a unobtrusive place and yet, it has been growing steadily and gained fan over the years. Isn’t that a proof that this place is delicious ?

Actually, there were many reviews that the "Gomoku Ankake Ramen" here was delicious.

A lot of seafood based ramen are listed in the menu such as the "Salt-champon ramen", the “Manila clam ramen”, the "Shrimp salt ramen" and the "Shrimp miso ramen".The shrimp miso ramen looked good, but our writer decided to believe in the word of mouth and ordered the "Gomoku Ankake Ramen” at 950 yen.

The "Gomoku Ankake Ramen" served was shining. By the the way the ingredients have been arranged and covered by the sauce, and you can tell that this ramen is delicious just by looking at it.

It's a thick soy sauce based soup, but it was surprisingly light and our reporter almost drank up the whole thick hot soup.

Chinese cuisine Seiryu

"Chinese Cuisine Seiryu" located in Midorimachi 15-chome, Arashiyama-dori.

There are many ramen shops on this street, such as "Ramen Hakkai", "Menmaru", "Asahikawa Ramen Koguma Group Chikafumi" and "Ramen Dojo Rakan”. Located among those fierce competitors, Seiryu is standing strong since its opening, in 1989.

Several small Chinese dishes and rice-based dishes are mentioned on the menu.
The first noodle dish written under the noodle category is the "Cantonese noodles (700 yen)".
Does this means that this is their speciality ?

This is Cantonese noodles from "Seiryu". As predicted, this is delicious.

It looks simple and a bit bland, but under the Chinese cabbage and pork, there were many kinds of vegetables like carrots and bamboo shoots.
It’s a shame that the taste doesn’t match its appearance. We can hardly post this on instagram.
But it truly tastes good!

This time, we introduced several ramen shops where you can enjoy delicious ankake ramen, perfect for the cold winter. During cold winters, spicy ramen are good, but if you don't like spicy food, why not try ankake ramen to warm yourself up ?
