You just can’t go through these alleys without eating those Asahikawa’s delicious yakitori

Furariito is a popular alley for citizens and tourists. Various shops and restaurants from the Showa era are established here. This nostalgic place is also home of 4 yakitori shops, once called the yakitori alley, gourmets used to come very often. In this article we will present you 3 yakitori shops.

Furariito

Named by the citizens, ”Furariito" is the nickname for the alley in 5 Jodori 7-chome in Asahikawa.
It started as a market before the war, but now there are 16 shops and restaurants. Izakaya, yakitori, and ramen shops, as well as liquor stores, fruit, vegetable shops, and hair salons stand side by side on the both sides of the alley.

From Wikipedia:
Yakitori is a Japanese type of skewered chicken. They are grilled over a charcoal fire. During or after cooking, the meat is typically seasoned with tare sauce (dipping sauce) or salt. The term is sometimes used informally for kushiyaki (grilled and skewered foods) in general.
Yaki means grilled.

Yakitori Ginneko

Founded in 1950, Yakitori Ginneko is a restaurant specialising in yakitori and the number 1 in Asahikawa.

Open from 1:00 pm, it is also a sacred place for heavy drinkers who can’t wait until the dark to drink. Our reporter also came right after the opening… For the sake of this article of course!

Yakitori Ginneko recommended skewers are “Shinko-yaki” and “Chappu-yaki", as well as pork liver, kumquat, kashiwa, chicken organs, gizzards, pork tongue and chick skins. There is a “complete course of skewers” set in which those 7 kinds of yakitori are included.

Of course, our writer ordered everything!

"Chappu-yaki" is made by grilling pork shoulder loin over charcoal and dipping the whole thing in yakitori sauce. There is also a rice-based dish called "Chappu Don" with this on rice. The onions are also sweet and delicious!

Yakitori Ginneko’s another speciality is the Shinko-yaki! Shinko-yaki is the half of a young chicken skewered and grilled over a charcoal fire. This local speciality has been popular in Asahikawa's yakitori restaurants for a long time.

You can take a picture of the half chicken and after you’re done the staff will cut the chicken into small pieces. It’s easier to eat that way!

A take-out option is available and you can also purchase frozen skewers at the roadside station or on the Internet to enjoy the same Shinko-yaki at home.

Yakitori Betty

Right next to "Yakitori Specialty Ginneko" is situated "Yakitori Betty," and managed by a beautiful mom.

There are 7 seats at the counter and 2 tables for 4 people on a tatami. Of course, lot of Betty Boop goods are displayed in the small store.

"Yakitori Betty" also makes Shinko-yaki, but its Shinko-yaki is made by baking the skin of an adult chicken called "Bird fangs," this skewer has less fat than chick skin. There is also the “Bandits skewer", which is made by grilling the thigh meat of a chicken. The yakitori here have an unique texture.

When our writer go to "Yakitori Betty", he always orders "Tori Motsu” (chicken entrails) and hot sake.

The big and plump offal is fragrant with charcoal and sauce, and this one dish is the best treat! Even during the hot summer, our writer is looking forward the warm "roasted kanzake”.

Yakitori Dojou Yoshiya

"Yakitori Dojou Yoshiya" was founded in 1945 and opened in the current Furariito in 1946. This is probably the oldest yakitori restaurant is Asahikawa.

The shop is on the left side of "Yakitori Betty". It is open from 14:00, so you can enjoy your drink from noon here as well.

At "Yakitori Dojou Yoshiya," you can enjoy loach Yanagawa hot pot in the summer and quail in the winter, in addition to ordinary yakitori.

There are counter seats and the atmosphere of the restaurant is perfect for drinking alone, but since there are 4 yakitori per plate going with few friends will allow you to eat more types of skewers before being full.

If you like sake, please ask for hot sake. The Sake is warmed up in a clay bottle and poured to the surface tension! Just to see how the staff does this, our writer orders this sake several times!
