Kanaya
A teahouse located on the 4 jo street.
Our reporter heard from an acquaintance that Kanaya have recently started making yaki-dango, which made our writer’s wagashi-loving blood boiling.
He had to eat these dango, and went immediately to the shop.
Inside the shop, there are many tea-related products from Shincha to affordable tea bags.
Wikipedia:
Shincha, "new tea", represents the first month's harvest of sencha and is characterized by its fresh aroma and sweetness.
Our reporter also heard that Kanaya added tapioca drinks and grilled dumplings to their menu. But unfortunately, our reporter couldn't buy any on this day.
According to the shop's social media, their tapioca drink doesn't look very good.
Nowadays, especially in Japan, selling something that isn’t instagramable is pretty unusual, making us really curious about its appearance.
Five grilled dumplings flavours are available:
Koshi-an (red bean paste), Mitarashi (syrup made with soy sauce, sugar and starch), Zunda (edamame paste), Matcha and Sesame.
Our writer ate the smooth, moderately sweetened koshi-an and the mitarashi dangos.
Due to their low sugar content, the dumplings were light and easy to eat, making them the perfect after-dinner treat.
It depends the place but, the mitarashi sauce tends to be heavy on the stomach, but this one is very easy to eat.
It is needless to say that since the dumplings are grilled, they have a pleasant aroma.
The usual stretchy texture is also irresistible.
Our reporter is quite the connoisseur about Asahikawa’s dango.
The tea sold in this shop goes incredibly well with the snacks. Those dango are great as an after-meal snack but the tea & dango set is also exquisite.

Taneda Confectionery
Located in Asahikawa’s downtown, near the intersection of 4 jo street, this cake shop was unknown to our writer since no informations about was written on Asatan.
Our reporter decided to go to the cake shop right after the lunch rush, which was a mistake: most of the cakes were already sold out. But luckily, our reporter found his favourite, the Mont Blanc, and bought it as soon as he saw it.
This is the simplest looking Mont Blanc we ever saw.
Moreover the main characteristic of the Mont Blanc, the vermicelli-shaped chestnut puree isn’t here!
Mostly covered with fresh cream, it sure has an unusual appearance
But take a bite and be amazed.
The aroma of chestnuts fills your mouth.
All the chestnuts are gathered in the heart of the cake!
It's full of chestnuts!
The chestnut cream is also very rich!
Another characteristic of this cake is liquor. It had a rather strong aroma, but it went well with the chestnut flavour. The two flavour are coexisting together peacefully.
He also bought an apple pie from this cake shop that was super-delicious. He will introduce it to you later.

Tomiya Confectionery
Located in Shintomi, Tomiya has already been featured in our Christmas cake special article before. But this time, they are featured for their anko red bean paste doughnut
Our reporter even “booked” his doughnut to be sure to be able to eat it.
When he came to the shop, only one azuki paste fried doughnuts was left.
A red bean paste donut or An-Donut, is a nostalgic snack that has been around for a long time.
As soon as our writer saw the large amount of sugar topped on the little doughnut, our writer felt immediately nostalgic.
Filled up with sweet bean paste, the dough is soft and moist.
As first glance, you may think that the snack is very sweet. Actually, not that much.
The bean paste is not that sweetened.
It has an old-fashioned taste that will take you to a trip in Showa Era.
It's perfect for snack time!
